The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund has provided $6 million to Lebanon in response to the explosion in Beirut port

China News Agency, United Nations, August 7, UN under secretary general for Humanitarian Affairs, Mr. Rocco, allocated US $6 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) on August 7 to help cope with the massive explosion in Beirut port. At present, the total amount of funds provided by United Nations agencies to Lebanon is 17.2 million US dollars. At least 150 people have been killed, more than 5000 people have been injured and a large number of local people have been left homeless after a violent explosion occurred near the port of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, on the evening of 4th local time. Novel coronavirus pneumonia, economic difficulties, new crown pneumonia outbreak and Syria refugee crisis are under enormous pressure,

Locock said. To the people of Lebanon, which has received millions of Syrian refugees, the international community should respond “promptly and firmly” and provide support. The United Nations Office for the coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said funding from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) is mainly used to support hospital treatment, repair damaged houses for the most vulnerable population affected by the explosion, and provide logistical support. In addition to funding, the United Nations has coordinated the deployment of experts from the international search and Rescue Advisory Group and the United Nations Disaster Assessment and coordination system to support relief workers in Beirut. The United Nations and its partners are continuing to assess the situation and mobilize emergency assistance, including temporary shelter for some 300000 displaced persons. A large storage granary in Lebanon was destroyed in the explosion and all 120000 tons of wheat and beans stored in it were lost, the UN Food Program said on the 7th, which may trigger the country’s food prices to soar. At present, the world food program has launched a large-scale assistance program, which will provide assistance to 50000 vulnerable families affected by the explosion, economic crisis and new epidemic situation. The total number of assistance is estimated to be about 250000.
