The spokesman of the permanent mission of China to the United Nations answers reporters’ questions on the Security Council’s consideration of the Kashmir issue

The spokesman said that the Security Council discussed the Kashmir situation on August 5 and heard a briefing from the UN Secretariat on the current Kashmir situation and the work of the UN India Pakistan military observer group. The members of the Security Council expressed concern about the current situation in Kashmir and hoped that the relevant parties would exercise restraint, properly solve problems through dialogue, and jointly maintain regional peace and stability. Zhang Jun, permanent representative of China to the United Nations, expounded China’s principled position on the Kashmir issue at the meeting. Zhang Jun said that in August last year, India’s unilateral amendment to the constitution changed the current situation in the Croatian region, causing a high degree of regional tension. A year later, the situation in the Croatian region has not been fundamentally improved and there is a danger of further escalation. China expresses serious concern over the current situation in Kashmir and relevant military actions and trends, opposes any unilateral action that complicates the situation, and calls on the relevant parties to exercise restraint and act cautiously, especially to avoid actions that aggravate the situation.
